Academy Experience 2017

Thursday, October 26th, West Potomac Academy hosted an Academy Experience Event, which was attended by FCPC employees from neighboring high schools, middle schools, and even elementary schools.  Among the guests were counselors, career center specialists, career and transition teachers, ESOL and special education resources teachers, and parents.

Our guests were briefed on the Career and Technical Education Programs offered at West Potomac Academy and introduced to our administrative team.  Our Special Education and ESOL resouce teachers shared that both students with IEP's and ESOL students would also receive support in their academy classes.  The Career Experience Specialist talked about the career opportunities offered to students including internships, job shadows, clinical observations, all due to business and community partners established with West Potomac Academy.

Students participated in a speed round of question and answers during breakfast, followed by tours to each classroom.  Guests were welcomed in classrooms with interactive hands-on lessons, energetic teachers, and were even able to watch Criminal Justice students participate in a field obstacle course set up on the high school track!

The event ended with lunch and a panel of both level one and two students who shared internship experiences, college plans and how their academy course has helped them.  Counselors asked questions about the choices students made to travel to the academy from a neighboring FCPS high school to attend an academy course and what advice they would give to a student contemplating taking an academy class.

By the end of the day, business cards were exchanged, academy tours were being set up for future students, and positive feedback was received about our students, staff, and academy programs.

We would like to thank all who participated.  If you are interested in visiting or learning more about West Potomac Academy.  Please contact us today!
