Prerequisite: Students must be 16 years old prior to the first day of instruction. Exploring Health Sciences and Exploring the Language of Medicine are recommended but not required. Exploring the Language of Medicine may be taken through Online Campus.

EMT 1 Course Description:

The curriculum for this course represents the National and Virginia Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Educational Standards. Students explore and apply the fundamentals of Emergency Medical Services (EMS), anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology while demonstrating skills in assessing and managing patient care, including assessing the scene and understanding shock, resuscitation, and trauma. Successful completion of this course and instructor endorsement qualifies students to enroll in EMT II to complete the program sequence. This course is part of the Claude Moore Scholars, a healthcare education program. HOSA, the co-curricular student organization, offers opportunities in leadership, community, and competitive events. Students must also register for part two, Emergency Medical Technician 2 (833426).

EMT 2 Course Description:

The curriculum for this course represents the National and Virginia Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Educational Standards. Students build on their knowledge and skills for providing basic life support by focusing on the areas of EMS operations, medical emergencies, and management of special patient populations. Supervised field experience that includes at least 10 patient contacts outside of school hours is required. Successful completion of all course requirements and instructor endorsement may lead to eligibility to take the Virginia State Psychomotor Exam and the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) cognitive exam. This course is part of the Claude Moore Scholars, a healthcare education program. HOSA, the co-curricular student organization, offers opportunities in leadership, community, and competitive events. This course has specific state laws and regulations from a governing medical board or agency.

• Industry certification may be available as part of this course. This course requires a student materials fee as listed in FCPS Notice 5922.
